The West Bengal government has announced a new WB Laxmi Bhandar Status Check Scheme for female heads of families. This Laxmi Bhandar is a new scheme to ensure monthly basic income support to women heads of 1.6 crore families of West Bengal. In this scheme, the government will provide a monthly allowance of Rs 500 (Rs 6,000 annually) to general category families and Rs 1,000 (Rs 12,000 annually) to SC/ST families.

The monthly average consumption expenditure of a family in the state is Rs 5,249. Providing monthly income support of Rs 500 (Rs 6,000 annually) to general category families and Rs 1,000 (Rs 12,000 annually) to SC/ST category families, amounting to 10% and 20% of their monthly expenditure respectively. This amount will be deposited directly into the bank accounts of 1.6 crore women heads of families in West Bengal. This will include every house of SC/ST community.

For the general category, this income support will be provided to all households except those with at least one tax paying member (42.30 lakh people) and those having land more than 2 hectares (2.8 lakh people). What is Lakshmi Bhandar scheme?

Lakshmir Bhandar Yojana was launched by the Government of West Bengal in February 2021 to provide financial assistance to women from economically weaker sections of the state. Under this scheme, a cash award of Rs 1,000 per month is given to women belonging to SC/ST category and Rs 500 to women belonging to other categories.

Eligibility Criteria for Lakshmi Bhandar Scheme

State Residence – The applicant must be a resident of West Bengal.
Gender – Only female applicants are eligible for this scheme.
Age Limit – The age of the applicant should be between 25 to 60 years.
Swasthyasathi Scheme – The family of the applicant should be enrolled in the ‘Swasthyasathi’ scheme.
Government Job – The applicant should not be in permanent employment with the Central or State Government, Statutory Bodies, Government Undertakings, Panchayati Raj Institutions, Municipal Corporations/Municipalities, Local Bodies, and Government Aided Educational Institutions nor be in receipt of Government pension.
